An Introduction to Gear Motors


A gear motor is a structural combination of an electric motor and a gear reducer. To choose the right power source (PMDC motor, induction motor, BLDC motor and stepper motor), you need to consider the power output and refer to motor characteristic curve. On the other hand, for selecting a suitable gear reducer (planetary gear reducer, worm gear reducer, spur gear reducer, helical gear reducer, bevel gear reducer), you need to consider the output torque, speed, and installation space.


The purpose of a gear motor is to lower the speed while increasing the output force. So, one may find these motors in industries that require appropriate power and speed. These may include heavy industries such as packaging, printing, corrugation, transportation, Food Processing Industry, three-dimensional parking, automatic storage, warehousing, chemical, textile, dyeing, and finishing.


How to Select the Right Gear Motor?


To choose the right model, you need to consider the following points:

1)  Calculate the gear reduction ratio of the motor according to its speed. You also need to determine operating speed of the machinery.

2)  To choose the right type of gear, match the machine load torque to the head motor output torque. You can refer to the “output torque table” provided by the manufacturer. The standard gear types include planetary gear, micro gear, helical gear, worm gear with reducer, precision gear, low speed gear, and gear with brake.

3)  Make sure to examine the additional features such as power brake, frequency, reduction box, and the type of shell material.
