9 Factors to Consider When Choosing the Right Linear Actuators

The primary responsibility of a linear actuator is to convert rotational motion to linear motion. It works quite differently compared to an electric motor. As a result, most hydraulic linear actuators often suffer from worn out seals, leaks, and pressure fluctuations from the pump.

An electric linear actuator can replace their hydraulic counterparts, providing you with a simple, safe and clean motion control alternative.

However, linear actuators come in a variety of sizes, use different technologies, and have different quality standards making the selection process a bit more challenging. Here is a list of most common linear actuators.

1. Telescopic Linear Actuator (also called lifting column linear actuators)

2. L-Shaped Linear Actuator (also called worm drive actuator or right angle actuator)

3. Compact Inline Actuator (usually comprises a planetary gear motor and spindle)

4. Dual-Motor Linear Actuator (comes with two worm gear driven motors that work either individually or simultaneously)

5. Linear Slide Actuator (a rod-less linear actuator without the outer tube)

6. Parallel Drive Actuator (consists of a spur gear motor placed directly parallel to the drive spindle)

1.Actuator Types

Though we use proprietary techniques and designs, we also have six common types of linear actuators mentioned in the beginning. You can select the one that best suits your linear motion systems.

2. Force

Force is a crucial factor for selecting a linear actuator. However, first, you will need to know how much weight the linear actuator needs to lift or push. That, in turn, will determine the force required by the actuator. If you need a higher force, you can pick the heavy-duty linear actuator. If not, a light-duty linear actuator or a lead screw actuator or a micro linear actuator can work just fine.

3. Efficiency

In almost all applications, a linear actuator has to overcome some amount of friction. As a result, you will also need to consider the friction level involved in your application. If you are using high-precision motion control systems, you should use a stepper motor linear actuator, servo linear actuator, ball screw actuator or linear guide actuator.

4. Stroke Length

The stroke length refers to the distance a linear actuator has to move in the equipment to complete the task. It determines retraction extent of the actuator. It also depends on the actuator type you choose. The typical stroke range (in inches) is – 1″, 2″, 4″, 6″, 8″, 10″, 12″, 24″, 36″, 40″, 48″.

5. Power Supply

Based on the supply of power, you will need to choose a suitable DC or AC linear actuator. At PJM, you can find the following types of linear actuators based on the power supply.

-Common DC type: 12V or 24V linear actuator

-Common AC type: 110V or 120V linear actuator

6. Speed

The speed of a linear actuator is the amount of time it takes to complete one stroke. It is often indicated in inches per second. Speed and load capacity are reciprocal. Usually, high-speed linear actuators have lower load capacity while low-speed linear actuators have a higher output force and hence better load capacity.

7. Noise

Noise also becomes a critical factor in selecting a linear actuator, especially if the movement needs to be smooth. For example, applications such as beds, massage chairs, and height adjustable desks need a quiet linear actuator. Worm drive linear actuators are commonly used for these applications because they operate with low noise.

8. Feedback Sensor

A linear actuator equipped with feedback sensors can actively report its stroke position to the control system. When it comes to choosing a linear actuator with feedback sensor, you need to consider two factors including its positioning and the ability to move actuator synchronously with a controller. 9. Application

Finally, you will need to consider the application before selecting a linear actuator. For example, you can choose a silent actuator for indoor applications such as TV lifts and windows opening. For outdoor applications, however, you may want to consider waterproof actuator such as IP66 linear actuator as they have longer life.
