When the motor is working, coils and commutator rotate, however, magnet and brushes do not turn. The alternating coil current is rotated with the help of the motor commutator and the brushes. So, how to find which type is the best choice for your project? Based on your cost and working application requirements, choose the following factors:

Motor Diameter

First, you need to match the motor diameter to the available work space. Motor diameter ranges from 8mm to 120mm. Usually, large frame size motors have higher torque output.


The motor length ranges from 16 mm to 70 mm.


Carbon brush includes graphite, the Baptist grease graphite, and metals (copper, silver) graphite.


Different types of bearings are used for high axial or radial load applications.


Neodymium magnets (NdFeB magnets) provide higher output torque however they are expensive. Though Ferrite magnets have good temperature resistance and low cost, their performance is relatively moderate. Still, they have become the most widely used permanent magnets.
