Universal Motor Range

A universal electric motor is a type of electric motor that can operate on both AC (alternating current) and DC (direct current) power supplies. They are commonly used in small appliances and tools where high speed and compact size are required. It is fundamentally a series-wound DC motor that has been specifically designed and modified to perform adequately when supplied with AC.

Key Features and Characteristics

☑Commutator and Brushes
Like brushed DC motors, universal motors rely on a commutator and carbon brushes to reverse the current direction in the armature coils as they rotate, ensuring continuous torque.
High Starting Torque
Universal motors exhibit very high starting torque, meaning they can get heavy loads moving quickly from a standstill.
High Speed
They are capable of running at very high speeds, often exceeding 20,000 RPM, much higher than typical induction motors, which often exceeds 10,000 RPM.
Speed-Load Characteristic
Similar to DC series motors, their speed varies significantly with the load. Speed decreases as the load increases, and at no load, they can reach dangerously high (runaway) speeds if not properly controlled or geared down.
Compact Size and Lightweight
For a given power output, universal motors are often smaller and lighter than other motor types, making them suitable for portable applications.

Universal Electric Motor Typical Applications

Power tools such as drills, grinders, saws, and sanders;

Household appliances such as vacuum cleaners, blenders, and mixers;

Portable devices such as sewing machines and electric shavers;

And industrial equipment that requires high speed and compact size.

The universal motors we provide meet industry standards and ensure excellent performance while complying with various regulations.

Disadvantages of Universal Electric Motors

• The presence of a commutator and brushes leads to wear, sparking, and noise.

• Requires more maintenance (brush replacement).

• Lower efficiency on AC compared to DC.

• Speed varies significantly with load and can "run away" at no load.

Universal motors are very flexible in design and control and can be configured in various ways according to specific applications. Key configurations and parameters that can be changed or designed for universal motors:

• Internal winding components, etc.

• Brush design and placement

• Lamination length

• Motor housing

• Voltage frequency

We can offer all size range universal motors from U54 to U98 series. Besides the standard series, if you want to order the specific-purpose universal motors, please contact us for specific information.
